Summary

Will marriage exist in heaven? Why did Jesus say that people will "neither marry" nor be "given in marriage" in the resurrection? In this episode of Apostolic Life in the 21st Century, Dr. David K. Bernard examines Jesus’ response to the Sadducees’ question about marriage and the resurrection in Matthew 22:23–33. Dr. Bernard explains the theological significance of this passage and what it reveals about the nature of eternal life and the resurrection body. Dr. Bernard also thoughtfully expl...

In the Gospel of Matthew, the Sadducees approached Jesus with this hypothetical situation

involving a woman who had been married seven times, once each to seven brothers in an effort

0:16.8

to fulfill Jewish law. Their story is absurd, I would say, but what I find interesting about

0:23.5

it is Jesus' response to their question of, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will

0:30.6

she be? And Jesus responded, you are mistaken, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God,

0:36.6

for in the resurrection they neither marry

0:38.9

nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels of God in heaven. This is Matthew 22, 29, through 30.

What I find interesting about this is, given how central marriage is to our earthly relationships,

0:52.0

I mean, our whole society seems like, for the most part, is structured around marriage. What does Jesus's response tell us about the nature of

0:59.4

eternal life, and why do you think marriage won't exist the same way in heaven as it does here?

1:05.8

Well, it's difficult for us to talk about the life to come because we don't really know much about

1:10.5

it, and it's hard for us to imagine an existence beyond ours that's even greater and more fulfilling

1:18.4

and transcendent. I feel like eternal life, we're going to remember our past life, but it's

1:26.5

almost like waking up from a dream.

1:29.6

So this is not what you're asking, but this will maybe set the context.

1:34.3

You know, some people ask, well, in eternity, in heaven, will we remember our sorrows?

1:38.7

If we have lost loved ones, will we know that they're not with us?

1:42.8

And then that wouldn't really be heaven and my answer is

1:47.1

I think we'll know the things of our past life but it will be like waking up from a dream into

1:54.0

reality so if I'm in a dream I can be frightened horrified what have you when I wake up from the dream, I'm not frightened.

2:04.0

I might be able to remember that I was frightened, but I'm not currently experienced that

2:08.2

emotion. So in other words, our present life seems so real to us. But in eternity, I think
