Hello and welcome to the 538 Politics Podcast. I'm Galen Drick. One of the big takeaways

from the 2020 election was the shift among Latino voters toward President Trump. Trump

increased his share of the Latino vote by around 8 percentage points between 2016 and 2020.

He was the biggest swing of any racial or ethnic group and with the fastest growing group

in the electorate. That kind of change will have big implications for the two parties if

it becomes a longer term trend. Last April, we spoke with the team at

Eki's research. A political data firm focusing on Latino voters founded by two former Obama

staffers about what exactly happened, what parts of the country saw the biggest swings

and among which segments of the Latino electorate.

And it came to the question of why it happened though. The answer was in large part, we need

more data. Well, now we have more data and the folks at Eki's are back with us today

to share it. Here with me are Eki's co-founders Stephanie Valencia and Carlos Odo. Welcome back

So you published a lot of data and we're going to dig into all of it, but let's start with

the big picture. You titled your most recent report, The American Dream Voter. How does

that framing fit in with why we saw that 2020 swing? Yeah, thanks, Galen. It's a great starting

point. I mean, if there is a feature of campaigning to Latino voters in the modern era, it's

always the American dream. You can go, you can look at Reagan ads, you look at Bush

one ads, Bush two ads, through the Obama ads. And there was always a debate about the American

dream. And the question is, is tug of rope over which definition of the American dream

will dominate? And it just so happened in this last election where you had many Latino

voters who had held back from Trump in 2016. They viewed it as socially unacceptable to vote
