Summary

Talking points: middle age, mindset, death, nice guys I've worked with legions of middle-aged men. As of 2023, I'm one of them. It got me wondering why so many of us radically change (or catastrophically implode) our lives in our 40s and 50s. Here's what I've seen, where I think it comes from, and where to begin ensuring it doesn't happen to you. (00:00:00) - Intro and why I call it the “middle passage”(00:02:52) - The biggest reason men go through a midlife “crisis”(00:06:59) - Pleasing Syndrome, and how to fix it(00:10:26) - Fear of our own depths(00:13:29) - The collapse of the illusion that right action leads to right outcome(00:17:34) - What do you actually do with this info? All right, team, welcome back to the man talk show. Today we're going to be talking about why so many men go through a midlife crisis. Now, I've worked with countless men over the years who have gone through some form of a midlife crisis. And as I turned 40 this year, this was something that I was kind of interested in

0:22.9

within myself, because I have seen the very real implosion and destruction that a midlife

0:29.3

crisis can cause. And I was curious about this, not because I was unhappy with my life,

0:34.3

but more so because over the years, I've worked with so many men who have

0:38.2

reached their mid-30s to mid-40s and all of a sudden radically changed their life or imploded

0:45.2

their life or had this really big sort of monumental change that had been stirring in the background

0:51.9

for years or even decades.

0:54.9

And so we're going to talk about what I've found, the three things, the three contributing

0:59.7

factors that really lead to a midlife crisis and what it can inform you, how it can

1:03.7

inform you to actually lead a better life regardless of how old you are.

1:08.7

So first off, I just want to say the middle passage through life. I like

1:13.6

calling it the middle passage. This is from Dr. James Hollis, who I've actually interviewed on

1:19.4

the Mantox podcast before. He's a very renowned Jungian psychologist. He's done some incredible

1:24.7

work and written a lot of books. And he actually wrote a book called

1:27.8

The Middle Passage, which if you haven't read it before, if you haven't heard of it, I would

1:31.8

definitely recommend checking it out. He goes deep into the midlife. And some of his work has

1:40.0

revolved around this midlife passage that we will all go through.

1:45.3

So in our culture, though, one of the interesting things that happens is that because

1:50.2

many people are very afraid of death, unconsciously or consciously, they avoid asking

1:57.2

the really big questions. And so the midlife gets a very bad rap because, again, we call it

2:04.4

the crisis, right? It's not necessarily a crisis per se. It's more of an awakening. It's more of a

2:10.8

shedding of an old skin. It's more of a letting go of the shackles that have held us down and the
