A while back, I was standing in front of the podium in a classroom,

preparing a lecture before my students arrived.

I was putting the slides up on the screen when a prospective student came up to me.

They asked me if I could give them a heads up when the professor arrived because they wanted to sit in on the class.

Of course, they were talking to the professor of said class.

But they mistook me for maybe... to the professor of said class.

But they mistook me for maybe IT or a TA or something.

I don't know why.

Maybe it's because I look young.

Maybe it's because I'm black. Maybe it's because I'm a woman or some

combination of all three. Whatever the case, I didn't square with their vision of

what a professor should look like.

You know the stereotype, an old white man with a gray beard and glasses

wearing a tweed blazer with maybe patches on the elbows.

I don't do tweed. Well, I don't do tweed like that.

The thing is, I wasn't surprised when this happened, because the same sort of thing happens to so many educators I know and others I don't know too, all because we don't look like the older white cisgendered man some people

expect at the front of the classroom and after a while it gets tired. So we're here to ask today why is it that in

2024 we're still not all taken as seriously as we deserve to be.
