position grueling fitness challenges and uncomfortable accommodations as incubators of manlier men.

Men so strong that nobody dares to mess with them or even to question their position at the top of the social order.

But as my guest will explain, actual alpha males in other species often display a radically different form of masculine confidence.

How do the people who claim to be alpha males or want to be alpha males define alpha males?

Yeah, well, it's interesting.

It's one of those terms in the English language whose meaning has changed a lot over time.

In the late 70s, there was this Dutch primatologist named Franz de Wall who needed a word to describe

the male chimps in a group that he was studying in a Netherlands zoo.

These chimps weren't necessarily the largest, but they were good at keeping the peace and consoling other chimps who were in need.
