Summary

I’m joined by my longtime friend Sarah and her husband Ben to talk about what happens when the people closest to you don’t support your relationship. We start with how they met and their very different religious journeys, then get into navigating outside opinions, value clashes, and major life changes while choosing each other anyway. Sarah shares what it was like to trust her own voice when friends and family pushed back, and Ben opens up about staying grounded through it all. @sarahtaplin @bentaplin @exhibitivart

0:43.9

And today we are so excited to have your husband Ben joining us. Before we get into it,

0:49.0

there's so much we're going to talk about. Can you two back up and just tell us how you met?

0:54.6

It's funny. We actually have different. I mean, no, we have the same version of the story, but. No, then let's hear both. Let's hear both stories. No, it's pretty similar. I mean, okay, it's pretty similar. Let's see if she, if she does it right, then I will have to. Okay. So I do, I don't want to just like jump right into the religious piece, but it, it definitely plays a large role into how we met because this was happening during, um, 2021 COVID era. And so in 2021 at this point, there were like very small gatherings happening.

1:28.1

Obviously, it wasn't like 2020 the height of quarantine.

1:30.9

But this is a year later.

1:33.2

And there were like small gatherings happening.

1:35.7

And I was kind of seeking more Jewish connection.

1:39.9

I have always been very connected to my Judaism, my faith, and my roots. But at this point,

1:47.7

you know, I was kind of seeking something deeper. And my friend Haya, who I had met through the

1:56.1

community I had been a part of before COVID, she was like, hey, you should come to my apartment.

2:01.6

I do like small Shabbat gatherings. And I was a little nervous because I didn't really know anyone and I

2:08.1

hadn't really been to anything other than my small pod gatherings. So I was like, okay, you know what?

2:14.4

Maybe I should just try. And at this point, I was really growing

2:18.9

religiously. And again, this part is important because Ben obviously is Orthodox, grew up Orthodox.
