Summary

Lately, life has felt heavy—but what if that weight isn’t just yours? In this episode of Black Girl Burnout, we explore what Resmaa Menakem calls the squeeze—the collective pressure Black women are feeling in this moment. We unpack how history, trauma, and societal expectations create an overwhelming demand to push through, even when our bodies and spirits are calling us to pause.

But, here’s the truth: Not everything is meant to be carried. Some things—old beliefs, obligations, and patterns—must fall away to make room for growth. Resmaa calls this Generative Decay, the process of allowing what no longer serves us to release so that we can step into something new.

Join us as we dive deep into:

✨ How to recognize when you’re being squeezed

✨ The myths about strength and resilience that keep us stuck

✨ What it means to tend to yourself instead of pushing through

✨ Practical ways to start releasing what no longer serves you

If rest feels unfamiliar, if stillness makes you uncomfortable—this episode is for you. Because when the world squeezes, we rest.

Welcome to the Black Girl Burnout podcast, Kelly here.

And today we're going to talk about the concept of the squeeze and how to let go of things in order to grow. This is directly following,

0:24.4

hopefully you listen to the episode with Resma Menachim, who is the first man that we've had on the

0:29.8

podcast. And we get into some really deep conversations. And so I wanted to break up this

0:36.9

conversation over a couple of weeks

0:39.1

versus over a course of a week to really dive deeper into some of the things that we're

0:43.9

talking about. You know, when Rezma and I get together, we're two therapists who just love to go

0:48.9

deep and go quick. But there's so much in the conversation that we had that I really want

0:53.9

to take the time to

0:55.2

pull back a little bit and really talk about what is this concept of the squeeze and how

1:01.5

do we learn to manage it, what we're feeling collectively as a culture, and how we learn to

1:09.4

let go of things in order to grow as people.

1:14.2

So let's start with this kind of definition of the squeeze, which is this immense collective

1:20.3

pressure that black people, especially us as black women, are feeling.

1:24.5

And it's really important to explain that even though we're in a time frame now

1:28.1

where everything feels so intense and maybe even amplified more than we're used to, this squeezing,

1:36.4

this cultural pressure that we're feeling isn't something that just happened today. It's the weight

1:41.6

of history and oppression and inherited expectation that we're

1:46.5

supposed to just push through when bad things happen. It's all of that hanging out. And so I want

1:52.2

to talk a little bit about why does it feel so heavy now? And what's the difference between

1:56.3

normal stress and this cultural pressure? And a lot of that is like, why are things so heavy now?

2:03.3

I mean, the obvious, there's economic turmoil. If you're in the United States, you're hearing
