Summary

In this Couch Talks, Amy and Kat explore two very real moments listeners are navigating right now…one about grief, and one about blending families and homes.

They begin with a note from a listener whose father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer. In the middle of her husband’s heartbreak, she offered him the phrase Amy and Kat say every week: “Have the day you need to have.” Permission to feel is sometimes the most supportive thing we can give someone.

This leads to Amy sharing a story about Kat affirming her decision to eat an entire bag of sharable M&Ms and an Auntie Anne’s pretzel from the Denver airport (FYI: the one in Terminal C is the best Amy says she’s ever had!) When Amy wondered how many servings of M&Ms she’d just eaten, Kat replied with: “You had the amount of servings you needed to have.” GOOD REPLY, KAT!!!

Then they dive into a second email from a listener wrestling with a big life transition: moving into her partner’s home as they prepare for marriage…kids, mortgages, logistics and feelings all included. How do you make someone else’s house feel like your home? Should she ask to be added to the deed? Is combining households always this complicated? They answer these questions (their opinions!) and Amy shares feelings she’s having about her boyfriend and this exact topic.

Welcome to Couch Talks, our Q&A episode of the Feeling Things podcast. I'm Amy.

And I'm Kat and quick disclaimer before we get into today's episode that although we might be giving

0:43.8

some feedback, this does not serve as actual therapy. Well, our first email is encouragement.

Oh. And then we have an email that has questions. So disclaimer not needed for this one. Good morning, Amy and Kat. I wanted to thank you for everything that you share. It really makes a difference. You're saying have the day you need to have is great. I have loved it since the first time I heard it and loved it even more when you explained it. The other day after Thanksgiving, my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer in his lungs

and his liver. My husband was devastated. And one day, as he was crying, he was saying, I'm trying

1:18.7

so hard to be strong. We talked about how you need to just feel what you are feeling. Anyway,

1:24.7

back to my original reason for the email. In the mornings when we go to work, we always give each other a kiss, say I love you, and have a great day. Yesterday, without even thinking, I said, have the day you need to have. He looked at me, smiled and said, thank you. I will have a day. So thank you both for making a difference in my life. And then she signed it and where she's from.

1:44.7

But then she also said, if you read this on the show, please keep me anonymous.

2:01.5

So we shall do that. So thank you for that email. And I'm really sorry for what you're going through, your husband, your father-in-law, that is never easy. And I can say from walking through cancer with both of my parents, there are so many days where y'all are all going to just need to have the day that you need to have. And hopefully that's

saying will come in handy more and more. I wish I had had it during my mom's journey. You know,

2:12.7

her motto and movement during her time was joy. The joy of the Lord is my strength is where she got that.
