Summary

The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 188 What is "Woke"? Even though it's a term that has come to us through slang and without a stable meaning as it evolved, the term "Woke" is increasingly coming to mean something quite specific and precise. For several years now, we have associated it with the radical Leftism of our day, sometimes being so precise as to say that it means having adopted (or "woke up to") a critical constructivist worldview. What does that mean, though? At bottom, Woke is a worldview rooted in entitlement and alienation that gets located for the individual in class conflict. By absorbing his own sense of alienation and "superseding" himself for a group identity, a man becomes "Woke." Along with that comes a preference for subjugated or marginalized knowledges and ways of knowing, as the lingo goes. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay breaks down "Woke" and all that it means in this deeper way. Join him to gain the insight needed to understand this important term correctly. Latest from New Discourses Press! Hey, everybody, it's James Lindsay, you're listening to the New Discourses podcast. And here on the podcast, we talk about woke a lot. So what is woke? That's the point of today's episode. I just want to do a casual episode where I just kind of talk about what woke means. Now, I can go off in a lot of like kind of throat clearing preamble,

0:41.3

talk about woke means critical consciousness, or woke means using critical theory, or woke means having a Marxist analysis, and all of that's true.

0:49.3

But I want to talk about woke as a mentality. This isn't the full story about what woke is,

0:55.8

because to develop the full picture of the philosophy will require us or would require us to

1:01.8

get into fields like ontology, which is a fancy philosophical word that means a philosophy of existence

1:10.7

or being.

1:11.7

What does it mean to be in the world?

1:14.1

Of course, as I've talked about in the past, I'm not going to really develop it here.

1:18.0

I think that woke has a fundamentally sociognostic ontology.

1:22.8

I think that it has adopted a frame of having been flung into a societal situation that it

1:31.2

doesn't recognize, that it didn't choose, and that it can ultimately liberate itself from.

1:37.9

But that's beside the point.

1:42.3

It's directly tied to what I'm going to say, but it's beside the point.

1:46.5

And so what I want to characterize woke as is kind of two things.

1:51.8

And they're related to one another.

1:53.9

Of course, I want to start by talking about how woke is rooted in a combination of entitlement and alienation.

2:01.9

So it is a mentality based on alienation in a particular way,

2:08.1

and that alienation is rooted in a sense of entitlement,

2:11.2

which is usually generated by other woke, we'll call them wizards out there,

2:17.4

who create a sense of entitlement in people,

2:19.6

then connect it to a sense of being alienated from the world that they feel like they should be in,

2:24.6

that they're entitled to be in, that then goes on to be attached to things that you're otherwise
