Summary

Saving American Liberty, Session 9 What is an American? Or, rather, what makes Americans American? This is a question we have been able to take for granted for a long time, but due to unwanted pressure from the "Woke Right," we're now facing a deliberate attempt to redefine American identity. At New Discourses, we believe in taking these kinds of challenges head on, so at the Saving American Liberty learning seminar we hosted in Dallas, Texas, on August 22-23, 2025, New Discourses founder, James Lindsay, made it his fifth, final, and anchor lecture of the event. It's an informative but more importantly inspiring talk that hearkens to the intrinsic and sacred covenant with Liberty that defines American identity. Join him for a better answer to the question "What is an American?" than you'll hear almost anywhere else, and may your faith in our great nation and its Blessings of Liberty be renewed by it. Okay, so this final talk of the workshop is titled, What is an American?

0:19.8

I have been informed that that's a very important question that we all have to be talking about now. What is an American?

0:26.6

And the original title for the talk was not that, but then I found out it's the question we all have to answer, so I figured I better answer it before they do.

0:33.6

And the answer, the original title was the Foundations of American Liberty. So you can look

0:39.3

at it either way. That was the intention that I had. But it actually answers the question. What is

0:43.4

an American? It's people who believe in the foundations of American liberty. But I actually give an

0:47.1

answer right from the start, which is Americans are citizens of the greatest, freest, most prosperous,

0:52.4

and most righteous nation that has ever existed on the earth.

0:56.1

That's what an American is.

1:01.0

But the trick, there's always a trick, there's always a fly in the soup, is I said that we're citizens of all these great things, most righteous nation. So we have to

1:13.1

understand what is a nation. Also, I don't actually feel too strongly about having to answer

1:20.5

the complicated question of what a nation is, but I want to let you know that there are other

1:24.7

people thinking about this question, and then I have thought about this question historically. So we'll start, as we started with another one of the talks,

1:32.6

with one answer to what a nation is from our beloved vice president.

1:39.3

You know, one of the things that you hear people say sometimes is that America is an idea.

1:46.0

And to be clear, America was indeed founded on brilliant ideas, like the rule of law and religious liberty,

1:53.0

things written into the fabric of our Constitution and our nation.

1:57.0

But America is not just an idea.

2:00.0

It is a group of people with a shared history and a common future.

2:05.6

It is, in short, a nation.

2:08.6

Now it is part of that tradition, of course, that we welcome newcomers.

2:12.6

But when we allow newcomers into our American family, we allow them on our terms.
