Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Epic Gardening Podcast. I hope you're having an amazing time. I certainly am enjoying myself because fall really seems to be here and all of my fall crops are actually doing well for once. You know, I didn't think the temperatures would actually go low enough for the fall stuff to really get started but it seems like that's the case so I'm very very excited now before we get into today's

0:21.2

episode we're going to do the podcast review of the day. This is from

0:24.8

base me on iTunes. So thank you, thank you. Thank you Kevin. I finally understood what

0:30.0

pH is and how I can manage it. I keep reading about this subject but the way you

0:33.4

approach the subject was very helpful in understanding this.

0:35.8

Awesome, I'm really glad that was something that had confused me for a while as

0:39.2

well in the garden and so I'm glad to spread a little bit of that knowledge out there.

Today's topic is going to be something known as vernalization.

0:49.0

Now, this is an important concept when growing plants, but I have to confess for me it wasn't

0:56.2

something that was on my radar simply because I'm in a zone where things typically

1:00.6

just don't go through this process and that's what we're talking about.

1:04.8

So let's go ahead and get into it.

1:06.7

The reason understanding this is important is because we're in a time we're growing garlic,

1:11.7

growing onions. Those are actually biannual crops and most

1:16.1

biannual crops require a cold treatment known as vernalization in order to move

1:22.0

from their vegetative phase into their reproductive phase.

1:26.0

If they don't get that stimulus, they will not flower or set seeds

1:31.0

even if they're grown under conditions that would normally support

1:35.3

that flowering process. So a plant that has a vernalization requirement helps to

1:41.4

ensure that the plant is not going to flower at a time of year

1:45.0

when the weather conditions actually don't support pollination, reproductive development,

1:49.6

all those things.
