Can you demystify this for me? Yes I can and that's a great

question because these are actually some confusing terms that often overlap

and understanding them will help you understand how to garden better. Okay let's tackle them one by one and let's tackle them one by one and let's

start with organic matter. This is the simplest and the most all-encompassing term and

it just refers to stuff that comes from biological sources.

So actually this would include humus,

both types of compost, mature and immature,

freshly cut plants, living plants,

et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Okay, so that is a very simple. living plants, etc, etc. etc.

Okay, so that is a very simple definition of organic matter.

Now, humus is the portion of your soil that is completely broken down,

and it's actually sort of a basket of components and no

one really could say exactly what Humis is because it is a bunch of different things sort of mixed into one definition.

But the best way to explain it is if you imagine compost that has been completely finished, as in it's broken down as far as it can be

broken down, you would consider that remaining stuff to be humus.

So that's what humus is. All right. Third, we have

compost. Now most of you probably know what this is, but I'll define it anyways.

It is organic matter that it is in a purposeful state of partial decomposition.
