0:15.8	Smith fell into a frozen lake and was trapped underwater for 15 minutes. He was rescued, lifeless, and rushed to the
0:22.8	ER where doctors performed CPR for another 45 minutes. Nothing happened. They were ready to declare
0:29.2	him dead, but before they did, his mother, Joyce, was allowed to go inside of the trauma room
0:33.4	to say goodbye. But Joyce couldn't give up on her son, completely overwhelmed by grief.
0:38.8	She cried out to God. Everybody heard it. Holy Spirit, please come and give me back my son.
0:45.2	Without a second's break, his pulse returned, strong. It jumped up and down, much to everyone's
0:51.2	surprise. But they assumed he'd have permanent brain damage. Yet again,
0:55.8	God wasn't done. Two weeks later, John walked out of the hospital alive without any brain damage at all.
1:02.0	These are stories that we love to hear, stories of miraculous healings, stories where we pray to God and
1:07.7	God says yes. But for every story like this, there are just as many in which
1:12.5	God says no. When a parent prays for a child with a disability to be healed, when a parent prays for
1:18.1	an unborn child to be born healthy, but she dies in utero. When a parent prays for a child to know
1:24.5	Jesus, but he walks away from Jesus. In some circles, there's an implicit
1:29.3	expectation that if you're faithful enough or trust God enough, then you'll receive whatever you
1:34.7	pray for, that John Smith's story could be everyone's story with enough faith. But that's not just
1:40.6	theologically untrue. It's relationally untrue because it turns God into a vending machine.
1:47.6	And he's our father, not a vending machine.
1:50.1	That's not how God works.
1:51.4	Faith in, miracles out.
1:53.5	And it totally ignores the testimony of Scripture because there were times when Jesus,
