What was really happening at the Last Supper? Why does Jesus keep talking about “the hour” that has come? And what does it mean that his blood establishes a “new covenant”? In today’s episode, Jensen shares how Luke 22:7–38 reveals the cosmic battle behind the cross and the new covenant Jesus came to establish through his sacrifice. Read the Bible with us! I'm Jensen Holt McNair.

So I grew up watching and loving the movie Shrek.

I mean, who didn't?

But in it, there's a line where Shrek says, ogres are like onions. They have layers.

0:23.8

They're complex. There's a depth beneath the surface that if you keep looking, you can find

0:29.1

more and more hidden. Well, this passage that we're looking at today, it's like an onion. On the surface,

0:39.4

it's a story that you've heard before.

Jesus is sitting down for the last supper with his disciples before he dies. Artists have painted the scene. Congregations reference the last supper in communion week after week,

and have done so for centuries, the last

supper table may be one of the most famous dinner parties of all time. And yet, as I read Luke's

description of this scene, I was shocked by some of the things that I found, mostly because I had no idea that Jesus ever said some of the

1:14.7

things at this dinner table. And that realization caused me to dive in, to want to figure out what was going

1:21.1

on. What is Jesus saying here? And in doing so, biblical scholars have uncovered layer after layer showing me the complexity of what's going on underneath its exterior, things that I had missed and things that the disciples, even as they sat at the table with Jesus, failed to see.

So before we dive into the passage, let's just remember what all we know

1:47.5

at this point in the book of Luke. So Jesus has spent his time in ministry talking about a time to

1:55.1

come, the hour when all that Jesus is preaching about would come to be true. And Luke has also already informed us

2:04.7

that Satan is patiently waiting for the opportune time, the time that he will attack Jesus to try and

2:11.0

thwart God's mission to rescue humanity. Luke's already informed us that Satan has entered Judas. He has prompted him to

2:19.9

betray Jesus to the religious leaders. And so now Judas is waiting for the right time to hand Jesus over.

2:28.5

And as we come to our verses today, already a cosmic battle is brewing. Jesus is a teacher walking on earth, teaching the

2:37.9

masses, guiding his disciples who believe he's the one who will redeem the nation of Israel,
