I'm Jason Roseoff. I'm Amy Sandler, and today we are talking about what it means to, quote, manage someone out, end quote.

We touched on this briefly in season five episode three.

That podcast was called Absentee Management versus Quiet Firing.

So we'll put that in the show notes.

But Brandy, you encouraged us to do this episode.

I think there was quite a visceral reaction that you had to the phrase, managing someone out.

What was going on there?

Yeah, so I believe in the episode you referenced Amy, the absentee management versus quiet firing.

Kim, there's one sentence where Kim says, quiet firing is different than managing someone out.

And the phrase bothered me then, but I didn't really investigate it.

But Kim recently recorded an example of something that we might use as additional workshops.

And twice in that recording, there was a reference to managing people out.

And I was aware that I just had such a bad reaction to it.

It feels very disingenuous to me.

You're using like a euphemism for something that actually sounds pretty terrible. And then when I

Googled it, when I did the research for this episode, I would say 90% of what I found is a very

negative thing that even HR professionals are saying that this is like a terrible thing to do to people.

And there is apparently a right way to do it, but it doesn't seem like that's happening for most people, including even HR professionals.

I'm really glad that you pointed this out, Brandy, because I don't really love the phrase either.

So let's try to think of a better one.

Here's what I mean by there's, so sometimes you have to fire someone. And that's one thing.
