| 0:00.0 | Hello, everybody. Welcome to the Radical Canter Podcast. I'm Kim Scott. I'm Jason Rosoff. |
| 0:08.6 | And I'm Amy Sandler. And today we're talking about a question that we recently got. And this is about something we say at the end of every episode. We talk a lot about in our workshops. And this is the idea of criticize in |
| 0:24.0 | private. And so the question that we got, this person asked, quote, if no criticism or mistakes |
| 0:31.1 | are discussed in public, doesn't that create an atmosphere where mistakes are hidden and therefore |
| 0:37.2 | bad, not allowed, |
| 0:38.8 | and possibly creates an idealistic picture of the organization, which is therefore fake, |
| 0:44.1 | as no organization is perfect, end quote. And when we got that question, Jason, you had a |
| 0:51.1 | reflection, first of all, about the question itself that I thought folks would really |
| 0:55.7 | appreciate learning how you looked at the question itself. When I saw this question, one of our |
| 1:02.5 | facilitators shared it with us, and they confessed that they were sort of a stumper. They weren't |
| 1:06.9 | quite sure how to answer initially. And as I read it, I was, I understood why it was a |
| 1:12.5 | stumper. And that's because I think often when someone is new to an idea, they sort of like |
| 1:16.8 | mush up a bunch of like related ideas and ask a question about three different things at the |
| 1:21.4 | same time. And that's what I think is happening here. Is this person is asking, I think it's all genuine. They've conflated |
| 1:30.1 | to some degree criticism with talking about a mistake. Because when we use the word criticism in |
| 1:37.1 | our workshops and when we've used in the podcast, we're often, we are almost always referring to |
| 1:42.5 | a type of feedback that is where you're talking to someone |
| 1:47.5 | about an issue or a mistake that they've made that's affecting their personal effectiveness, |
| 1:53.5 | growth, or development. So we're talking about the type of criticism that is intended to help |
| 1:58.9 | someone develop. But this person has mushed that idea up with talking about a mistake that has happened |
| 2:05.9 | or that the team has made or an error or an issue that has happened that is generally, |
| 2:12.5 | it would be generally useful to discuss. |
