0:00.0 | Well, hello there. It's Morgan here and welcome to today's episode. Today I'm going to be reading |
0:05.8 | something that I actually shared on the podcast a year ago. However, I don't know how it happened, |
0:12.2 | but somehow it has disappeared from the archive. And I've been asked about it a few times. |
0:17.5 | So I wanted to just re-record it and reshare it. And that's what I'm going to be sharing |
0:23.6 | today. So it's a little bit about this idea of flying too close to the sun. There is an ancient |
0:31.8 | Greek myth about a guy named Icarus who flew too close to the sun. He flew too close to the sun wearing wings |
0:39.8 | that were made by his father and the wings were made of wax. And against his father's wishes, |
0:46.0 | he flew too high and in the heat of the sun the wings melted. And as a result, he fell from the sky |
0:52.4 | and fell to his fate. |
0:55.1 | So if you've ever heard the phrase, don't fly too close to the sun, that's where this comes from. |
1:00.2 | And it's meant to be a cautionary tale to caution us against recklessness and how ignoring one's limitations can lead to disastrous results. |
1:16.3 | And this is true. And something else is also true, |
1:24.1 | and that is the other part of the story. See, Icarus' father didn't just tell his son not to fly too close to the sun. He also told him not to fly too low to the sea, for the sea's |
1:30.4 | dampness could clog his wings. We've all in one way or another been cautioned about not flying too high, |
1:40.8 | to make sure that we don't get on a high horse or to become too high and mighty. |
1:46.4 | But I can't help but notice. And this is especially true, the more marginalized identities that you hold. |
1:54.9 | We are not often told as near as much, not to fly too low. Our humility becomes hiddenness. Our kindness becomes |
2:07.8 | quietness. The ways that we've been silenced or tokenized or made to feel less than makes us feel |
2:17.0 | like we have to question our every move. |
2:21.8 | Yes, there are people flying too close to the sun and they get all of the attention for all the risk |
2:29.2 | they are taking and there is some real caution there. |
2:41.5 | And at the same time, there are billions of people who are not concerned with being the one who climbs the highest mountain because they never experienced the liberation to freely climb the tree |
