On this program, Debbie Milman talks with author Caroline Paul and illustrator

Wendy McNaughton about their unusually intimate collaboration on a book.

She was going to write the book and then she was going to give it to me and then I was going to draw to her writing.

But we quickly realized that this is not the typical writer- illustrator

relationship, because we're in a relationship.

Here's Debbie Millman. The author Caroline Paul has fought fires, crashed planes, and been trapped on mountainsides.

But recently, she suffered a more common calamity.

Her cat, Tibby, disappeared. She looked and looked and never found

him. And then, five weeks later, the cat came back. But why? What was he up to? Caroline's attempt to answer that

question is told in Lost Cat a true story of love, desperation, and GPS

technology. Her partner, the illustrator Wendy McNaughton,

provided the illustrations. Caroline and Wendy, welcome to Design Matters.

I'm so happy to be here. Great to be here, Debbie. So Wendy, I understand that you grew up in San Francisco and you graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1999.

What made you decide to study art and design? Did you always want to be an artist and a designer?

Well, first off, I should say that I actually grew up in Marin County, which is across the bridge from San Francisco, but I claim to have grown up in

San Francisco as many kids who have grown up in Marin do. So you're deliberately

misleading me? Yes and I'm glad it worked up until this moment.
