Unfictional is KCRW's program of stories andaries, and today, welcome to the medal, two stories

on the subject of prison.

In one story, the woman who grew up the daughter of a strip club manager.

At first, things were strange but happy, but then came the shocking

event that separated her life into a before and after. But right now in the first part of the program

it's a completely different kind of story about some strangers

finding a way to connect despite some considerable and very literal barriers.

Christopher Johnson produced this story for unfictional which shows that even through curtains, bars,

walls, circumstance, and time, two people who have never met can still touch each other

as long as they've got the medal.

Welcome to the Medal was a program on, well, is, continues to be a program on WGRE, which is the radio station at DePaul University in Greencastle, Indiana.

It's a small station, it's only 100 watts, totally student-run.

So we got away with a lot. So what was great about the station physically

is that it was all glass and we looked out onto the campus.

That being said, there was a curtain.

So we would usually close the curtain

for Welcome to the Medal because we were headbanging

most of the two hours. You know it was our own stage in there.

So yeah we were rocking out.
