Summary

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)

Isaiah had a vivid dream of God seated on his throne surrounded by angels. One of the angels took burning coal, touched Isaiah’s lips, and cleansed him from sin as God asked the question “Who will go for us?” And Isaiah answered with a resounding “Send me!” He went on to become an adviser for many kings and called on people to repent and be obedient. But the most important message he shared was the message that a Savior, the Messiah, the Prince of Peace was coming! His prophecy was fulfilled with Jesus.

Isaiah was ready for the privilege of serving God even before he knew what he was meant to do. He offered himself to the Lord immediately. Most of us are slower to commit. Questions and fears flood our minds: If I say yes, will he send me to be a missionary far away? Where am I going? What do I have to say and do? Will I have to give up things that I love? What is the cost for me?

Isaiah knew that if God was calling him, it must be important and worth saying yes to. Growing closer to the Lord also means knowing his calling won’t lead us astray. When God invites us to do something, we don’t have to be afraid—we can be excited! We want our kids to know that truth as well. They don’t need to know every detail, they just need willing hearts that are excited and ready to follow!

This week, let’s pray that our kids say yes to God with enthusiasm, not hesitation or fear!

Lord, help __________ say “yes” to you with joy and excitement. Give them a heart that is eager to follow your plans, knowing that you have great things in store. When you call them, help them to trust you completely, knowing that you will lead them every step of the way. Amen.

Welcome back to Part of the Mess.

0:15.8

I'm your host, Courtney Defeo, in this week 21.

0:18.4

We're going to talk all about Isaiah.

0:20.6

And what we learned from Isaiah is that he had an enthusiastic yes to God. But before we get into that, I want to remind you of this, just the resources that are out there for you. If you're having trouble understanding the Bible or you're hearing some of these things from me and you're like, wait, who is Isaiah? What book of the Bible was that? And I really want to remind you guys that I am not a theologian. I'm doing my best to be as accurate as I can,

0:41.2

but we're doing like little tidbits along the way. And there's such a bigger context. And so,

0:47.1

for example, the book of Isaiah is a complicated book. It's about judgment and justice. So the

0:53.0

Bible project is something I think if you don't know about that,

0:56.0

it's got the most cool videos. Go to YouTube or go to their site, Bible Project, and they will

1:01.3

take a book of the Bible, Isaiah, and explain, like, where does it fit in the Bible? Who was the writer?

1:06.3

What was the context? What was trying to be communicated? And so it's a really helpful tool. Also, Bible recap,

1:12.6

if you don't know about that, Terri Lee Cobble does a great job of explaining context and giving

1:17.6

you context for each of the books of the Bible, and she can help you guide you through the year.

1:22.4

Another thing is just an NIV or any book, really, any Bible study study Bible. So when I was the first kind of welcome

1:28.7

with the Lord again right after college, my mom gave me a study Bible, which basically has some

1:33.0

cliff notes at the bottom. You're reading it right below it says like, what does that mean?

1:36.7

What is the context for that? And so don't be embarrassed. If you're a new Christian, or even if you've

1:41.2

been a Christian 40 years like me, like we need help sometimes from our pastor or a mentor or these resources online to say, like, I don't really understand what was trying to be communicated here. So don't forget to just lean in and study that way. And also, if your kids don't understand something, you don't have to know all the answers. You can say, you know what? I don't know. Let's go look at that together and see what that meant. And so don't be embarrassed and be sure to lean into the resources that are available to you. So as we look at Isaiah, we're looking at Isaiah 6A, the moment that he hears the voice of the Lord. And this is what it says, Isaiah 6A, and I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, here I am, send me. This is a

2:23.1

verse known for Isaiah. He didn't know the details. He didn't know where God was taking him. He didn't

2:28.4

know what the Lord was wanting him to do, but quickly, an enthusiastic yes, Isaiah said,

2:33.0

Lord, here I am, send me. And so what we learn about

2:36.3

Isaiah through this moment is that he didn't need the details. He was willing to follow God and
