Yesterday, the House of Representatives voted 216 to 210 to remove McCarthy as its speaker,

following a motion to vacate the chair by Representative Matt Gates late Monday.

Gates leads a faction of hard-line Republicans who have long clashed with McCarthy,

most recently over his decision to keep spending levels steady and work with Democrats

to avoid a government shutdown.

It's the first time ever that the House has voted to remove its own speaker.

While an uncharted territory, the House won't be completely acoustic.

Representative Patrick McKenry will serve as temporary speaker.
