The takeaways from day 7 of the Derek Chauvin trial were testimonies by four witnesses.

The first witness called by prosecutors today was Sergeant Curry Yang, a crisis intervention

training coordinator with Minneapolis PD.

Sergeant Yang asserted that officers are supposed to constantly reevaluate situations and change

their actions accordingly.

Prosecutors here were trying to establish that the officers were trained to assess the

situation and should have gone from using force against Floyd to trying to provide him

with medical attention.

The next testimony was from Johnny Mercell, a police lieutenant who's a use of force trainer

who teaches officers Brazilian jujitsu and other hands-on tactics for subduing subjects.

Mercell testified that when trying to control a subject, officers are trained to use the

lowest level of force possible.

When the prosecution directly asked Mercell if Chauvin's position pinning Floyd to the

ground was a trained necrestrate, he said no.

The defense lawyers also asked Mercell about whether unconscious people can suddenly regain

consciousness and fight back, and he agreed with the defense lawyer that that was possible,

which is an argument that the defense definitely wants to emphasize.

The third testimony was from officer Nicole McKenzie, the medical support coordinator for

the Minneapolis PD, making her the eighth member of the department to testify for the prosecution.
