Welcome to the Black Girl Burnout Podcast. Kelly here. And today is our first series in the segment I'm calling me to talk about it. So today, we're going to start with

we need to talk about it. Pay disparity in our community, particularly amongst black women.

In the news recently, you've all seen the viral clip of Taraji P. Henson in tears discussing

how hard it is for her to make a living in the field of acting. And it really sparked a firestorm

online of black women from all backgrounds professionally, understanding where she was coming from,

feeling her pain and feeling triggered. Maybe that was you. Her tears were real and honest,

and it was hard to not feel something when you heard Taraji talking about the many decades of

excellence she's given to the acting field and to know that the compensation just wasn't where

it should have been. And I want to talk about it. I want to talk about it through several

different lenses. And so this is just episode one.

Stick with me this week as I dig into more.

So today we're going to talk about pay disparity.

And I'm going to push you to think about solutions to this issue beyond advocacy.

What I mean by that is I want to talk to you about what do we do

while we're waiting for the larger system to make it equitable in the workplace, to make

sure that we get paid just as much as Chad and Brad. While we're waiting for that, though,

what can be done to optimize our lives today?

I'm not anti-raising awareness on this issue, but what I am going to push you to do is to get beyond

being stuck in the struggle of fighting for more money from a system's perspective.

And instead, I want to talk about practical ways I've been able to leverage more money in my life.

In practical ways, I think all black women, all of us could use skills that we could develop

to make sure that we are getting paid our worth.
