I want to thank President Xi, my friend, for this magnificent welcome.

President Donald Trump wrapped up his first full day in China earlier today with an extravagant

banquet in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, where he toasted

to growing ties between the U.S. and China.

Just as many Chinese now love basketball and blue jeans, Chinese restaurants, in America

today outnumber the five largest fast food chains in the United States, all combined.

That's a pretty big statement.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping, meanwhile, through an interpreter, struck a warm tone, praising

the great people of both their nations and spoke of high stakes.

We both believe that the China-U.S. relationship is the most important bilateral relationship

in the world.

We must make it work and never mess it up.

Earlier, the two leaders met face-to-face for nearly two hours.

Both sides described it as a positive conversation. The Chinese readout made note of a warning from Xi over Taiwan, saying if the issue is

mishandled, Washington and Beijing could, quote,

collide or even enter into conflict, pushing the entire China-U.S. relationship into a highly

dangerous situation. China claims Taiwan as its sovereign territory, despite never controlling

the self-governing democracy, the Trump administration has sent mixed messages on Taiwan.

A White House official also said Trump and Xi discussed the war with Iran and agreed that the

Strait of Hormuz quote must remain open. They also said Xi expressed an opposition to

Iranians charging a toll to ships attempting to pass.
