This story starts on a Thursday night in September, late, technically Friday.

You know how you get that call at 4.30 in the morning and you know this isn't good.

This call was from Ronaldo Prieto's son, Manny.

Manny was 24, living with his folks out on Long Island, east of New York City.

I said, what's the matter? He said, I passed out.

A friend had been driving Manny home from work at Wendy's.

They stopped at the store and he had a seizure right in their car.

Manny had woken up in the ER.

Ray heads over right away.

Doctor says Manny's got a super serious brain condition and admits him to the ICU.

The family spends all the next day in the hospital with Manny.

And on their way home, Ray says to Manny's mom, leave you, that he's a little worried

because Manny doesn't have insurance.

This was 2004 before Obamacare, which did lead to a lot more people having insurance.

Lydia says, don't be ridiculous. This is America.

And look, I'll just tell you straight up, Manny died because he couldn't get the treatment he needed.

Here's Ray.

I lost my son because he had no health insurance.

And you fought for him.

And I fought very hard for him.

Ray won a kind of victory for a lot of people who never even meet.

With allies, he never heard of.
