Good evening from New York. I'm Antonia Hilton in tonight for Chris Hayes. We are now in the second day of Trump's federal occupation of Washington, D.C.

The White House is now threatening an even more pronounced presence of National Guard members on the streets, patrolling 24 hours a day.

All told, 800 troops will be deployed to the streets of the Capitol, plus an additional

500 federal law enforcement agents. Advocates for the homeless now fear that D.C. residents

may be put behind bars for the apparent crime of having nowhere to live.

And the city's Democratic mayor, Muriel Bowser, is walking a very fine line with her

It's clear that she believes that she must strike a balance, collaborating with federal

law enforcement, appeasing an administration that hasn't been shy about wanting even more

The D.C. Guard is in fact the President's Guard. The mayor cannot launch the D.C. National Guard. We all need to do what we can in our space in our lane

to protect our city and to protect our autonomy, to protect our home rule, and get to the other

side of this guy and make sure we elect a Democratic House so that we have a

backstop to this authoritarian push.

That kind of criticism, it appears to be getting to the president, who today lambasted those who are
