Good evening from New York. I'm Antonia Hilton in tonight for Chris Hayes.

The National Guard has now mobilized in Washington, D.C., and yet another example of President

Donald Trump, using the power of the state to target a Democratic city with a large, non-white

population. The White House says there are 850 National Guard members on the streets of D.C. now,

and that as of this morning, they had already arrested dozens of individuals.

Yesterday, Trump announced he would be federalizing law enforcement in our nation's capital

in response to what he claims is an unprecedented surge in crime.

Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals,

roving mobs of wild youth, drugged out maniacs and homeless people,

and we're not going to let it happen anymore. We're not going to take it.

Well, to be clear, that caricature of

D.C. as apocalyptic and criminal, that's the picture that's painted for you if you watch

Fox News all day. But it does not match the reality that is on the ground. As the DOJ noted itself

earlier this year, shortly before Trump took office, violent crime in D.C. was at a 30-year

low. Violent crime is down 26% this year so far. And when she was pressed about actual steps the

DOJ could be taking to reduce crime, the U.S. attorney for D.C., former Fox News personality,

Janine Piro, of course,

well, she didn't seem all that concerned.

You said it's guns on the street that's causing this problem.

Are you concerned that the DOJ's funding cuts to gun violence prevention programs undermine the efforts?

We are putting all kinds of resources onto the street.

But what about the gun aspect of the gun violence?
