On Capitol Hill, Democratic infighting appears to be threatening President Biden's domestic agenda.

The president was scheduled to visit Chicago today. I'd have been part of that trip. But that has now

been postponed. Now, he'll remain in Washington to work with lawmakers on a path forward for the

$3.5 trillion reconciliation package, also called the Build Back Better Act and the bipartisan infrastructure

deal. This comes as pressure is growing on the present to be more personally involved, to better

define the stakes with democratic lawmakers and try to bridge the gap between the progressives

and moderates who right now not only find themselves far apart, but really find themselves

not able to trust the other.

That's the dilemma that Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, finds herself dealing with,

caught between these progressives who want to enact ambitious social programs and the

centrists who have balked at spending trillions of dollars. Pelosi sent a letter to her colleagues

yesterday, calling it morally imperative for them to pass the act.

But progressives are reiterating that they won't vote for the bipartisan infrastructure deal tomorrow

unless the $3.5 trillion plan passes first.

Senator Bernie Sanders urged House Democrats to vote against infrastructure until a deal is reached.

My fear is that if the dual agreement that was reached is broken,

and we just passed the infrastructure bill, the leverage that we have here in the Senate

to pass the reconciliation bill will be largely gone.
