Rafi Kudikian and David Coughlin were best friends, had been since college.

Rafi, an inspiring journalist and David, a traffic policy analyst, were both in their 20s and, in Boston, Massachusetts when in July of 1999,

they decided to go on a road trip all the way to California, where David planned on attending

graduate school. It was going to be a great trip. David was going to be attending UC Santa Barbara,

where he was going to get an environmental science degree.

And after delaying the trip so Rafi could go with him, he was excited to head out on this new

adventure with his best friend. And everyone else seemed to be just as happy about the arrangement.

That only did it mean that David was no longer traveling across the country alone,

but Rafi had experienced traveling such a long distance.

Just two years earlier, he spent 10 weeks traveling through 25 states,

camping through most of it,
