Hi, I'm Edwards 3, and welcome to all things Catholic, where real faith meets real life.

When we first moved to Colorado many years ago, I was so excited to take my family for a hike

in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains.

Now, I had come out here many times in my young adult years to go camping and hiking,

and I loved it,

but now I lived here.

It was incredible.

I could just go up on any given weekend and go for a hike in the mountains.

This is amazing.

And I remember telling my kids about this and they were excited.

And finally, one Sunday afternoon, we had a chance to drive up into the mountains for our first family hike.

And it was just a spectacular day, beautiful, clear blue skies.

And we get to the parking lot, we get out of the car, and I start leading my family down a trail.

I got the fresh scent of the pine trees.

It was just a spectacular, perfect day until I turned around and noticed

that my kids weren't following me. They were still back toward the beginning of the trail.

And they looked really, really frightened. And I remember wondering, something's really wrong.

They were just frozen. I said, what's wrong? And I could tell one of my kids is looking at me with a lot of suspicion.

Dad, why are you making us do this? And another one, my kids, was stressed out and just shouts out, no, no, we can't go. And another one had this anger. Why are you making us do this? And they were just in utter terror. And I asked

them, what's wrong? And they just point to the sign. And there was a sign by the trailhead.
