Summary

Often when you tell someone you’re vegan, the response is: “Why are you vegan? Is it for health or ethics?” Somehow, the answer matters, and depending on your answer, people respond differently. Join me as I discuss if our motivation to become vegan affects our dedication to remain vegan. I also share my opinion about people who identify as "plant-based" rather than "vegan."

health or you vegan for health, are you vegan for ethics?

0:53.2

And personally, I find that a very interesting response,

0:56.7

1:06.1

fascinating if we say it's for health reasons I think that person tacitly applauds us

1:11.2

for doing something beneficial for ourselves, but if we say it's for ethical

1:15.4

reasons or for the animals, I think it makes people feel threatened or judged because, as I've talked

1:21.3

about in the past, a mirror is held up that forces them to look at their

own choices.

1:28.0

Frankly, I think most vegans will say that though there may have been one thing that sparked their desire to become

1:33.9

vegan, they remain so for a number of reasons. And I find it interesting that

1:39.5

there's an expectation that we have to choose one reason. I mean I think the question itself is perfectly

1:44.8

reasonable because most people aren't surprised if you say well I'm vegan for a number of

1:49.0

reasons but I also think that what they're really asking is, you know, what was it that made you become

1:55.2

vegan? What happened that made you make that choice? What motivated you to become vegan?
