What do you make of what has happened in Brussels tonight?

So I never thought that the deal or the talks would completely collapse tonight

because actually it's important for both sides to be seen to be at least trying to get a deal. But as both Downing Street and

the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, have said this evening, the gap between the two is huge.

And it is especially huge on this issue of the so-called level playing field.

And the fundamental issue is this.

The EU is saying that over time, they may want to change their labour laws.

They may want to change their environmental standards. They may want to change other

rules and regulations that affect the competitiveness of their businesses. This would be a sort of,

what they would call a sort of natural evolution. And they are not saying that the UK has to

follow them, has to adopt their rules, but they are

saying that in any free trade agreement, you have to have the right to revisit whether or not

zero tariffs are appropriate in those circumstances. And that is absolutely central to the EU's position.

Boris Johnson is basically taking the view that somehow bullying the UK into adopting EU standards.
