Manufacturing dissent since 1996, this is hell back in the day.

In fact, when we started this show back in the 20th century, supporters of economic sanctions argued they were a far more humane way of influencing the actions of an adversary than engaging in an all-out, total war.

I mean, it makes sense.

War is hell, so what could possibly be worse.

Of course, we interviewed guests who actually visited where U.S. sanctions were imposed,

who defied those sanctions by bringing medical aid to Iraqis as well as toys and musical instruments to children in Iraq.

For their humanitarian work, our guests and the group they worked for were regularly targeted by the U.S. State Department for prosecution and

punishment. Yes, in the United States, you punish people who feed starving children and those

who oppose genocide. And as it turns out, sanctions are as deadly as war and worse have been tolerated

and normalized to the extent that the actual sanctions last longer and can have a far more

lingering impact than military engagement can. Case in point. When the Clinton administration

was imposing economic sanctions on the Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein during the 1990s, the argument was, well, at least it's not war.

While well over a million, possibly into the millions, plural, died with children suffering the brunt of those very avoidable and completely unnecessary deaths, there was such denialism of those

atrocities here in the United States that President Clinton was actually being nominated for

the Nobel Peace Prize, despite the concurrent and constant illegal bombing of infrastructure

and aerial attacks

in what was then called the no-fly zone by the U.S. in Iraq.

Now a new study shows that economic sanctions that kind Clinton was imposing,

and his predecessor, President George H.W. Bush, and his successor, George W. Bush, did as well,
