Hi again and welcome back to Radio Headspace into Thursday morning.

I'm Sam and like every Thursday I'm looking forward to Friday night because it's the night I spend with my family.

Every Friday night my family gathers to celebrate the end of the week, a Jewish tradition called Shabbat.

And it's a precious time for us to connect with each other as we disconnect from technology and give ourselves permission to just relax.

Last week after we finished our meal, I began telling my family about a time that I volunteered in Guatemala.

I was working with a non-profit at the time and while I was there, I taught English to children who had no access to formal education.

I also discovered the Mayan zodiac known as Nahuelis. One of the professors was telling us all about them.

Nahuelis are animal companion spirits that are believed to influence your personality and life direction and they're based on your birth date.

I learned that everyone has a distinct Nahuel and that mine is called Death, which despite the grim name is known for being a catalyst for change and facilitators of transformation.

The professor describing my Nahuelis said that the death sign is able to touch the depths of human suffering in themselves and others, helping others to transform and see challenges as opportunities.

And many people falling under this Nahuel gravitate towards psychology.

When I heard all of this, I felt really affirmed by this description of my Nahuelis as I connected to many of the characteristics that were being described.

So I was telling the story to my family over Shabbat dinner and everyone became curious about their own Nahuel and of course wanted me to look them up and read the descriptions out loud.

As I started to read them, people would either agree or disagree about the various characteristics that were assigned to them.
