The sky was brightening as Dameau drove off the highway and onto the road into Almasina. Ahead of him, the church and castle rose into view

above the patchwork of terracotta roofs in the distance.

Casa Underwood, as David called it, was about 15 minutes drive out of the other side of town.

It was clear he wouldn't be able to get to the house before the sun was up, a change of plan was called for. He had to go home, back

to the little house he shared with Ang, his off and on girlfriend of the last two years. How would she react when he started barricading

the bedroom against the sunlight, closing all the shutters, pulling all the curtains?

How was he going to tell her what had happened to him? Could he even?
