listeners, and welcome back to Blood and Smoke.

As you may recall, this is a story told by Lord Underwood to Arthur Flinch on an early tape recording machine in London in 1940,

and it is listened to not only by you, but by David Flinch in Almasina, Spain, shortly after his release from police custody.

In our previous episodes, we heard how Underwood and Matthias Flinch were rescued from the Vampire's Island by a

Portuguese ship that then took them on to Kingston, Jamaica. Mathias was reluctant to go as sure because he's wanted for desertion by the Royal Navy, but Underwood convinced him through a subtle manipulation of his mind that he was safer with him than on the Portuguese ship.

A selfish move on Underwood's part, but for him a necessary one, as he knows that for now at least, he can't survive without Mathias' help.

Once they were safely ensconced in a hotel, Underwood went out on the town looking for blood and a ship to charter.

He found blood in a back alley with a prostitute,

and a ship charter down in a dockside tavern, courtesy of one Captain Catesby.

It was all going very well for Underwood, until he was awoken at dawn and arrayed by the officers of the Night Watch.

When last we saw him, Underwood was getting kicked and beaten and bundled into the back of the Watchman's

wagon.

Now, as this episode begins, we find him slowly swimming back

to consciousness.

When I came to the sack was still over my head but on discovering my hands were free I pulled it off.
