The following afternoon we reached Jamaica. It was impossible to sleep through the ruckus of preparations for making port, the sound of feet running hither and thither up on deck, the shouting and laughter, and down below, even

the rats seemed to be in a state of excitement at the prospect of Shoreleaf.

Actually that journey was the first time I noticed how they changed towards me. of Oh, Underwood shuddered audibly.

Gastly things, of all the creatures that should take a shine to me, it had to be rats, didn't it?

They took a shine to you, me lord.

Yes, call it a shine, a liking, an unnatural interest.

Whatever it was, I didn't much care for it.

I loathe rats.

Bastards used to nip at me when I was in Newgate checking to see if I was dead or only sleeping,

and if I was only sleeping, whether I had enough strength to fight them off.

They used to gnaw on the weak as well as the dead, seen them doing it on the battlefield, too.

Horrible creatures. But anyway, Matthias was off somewhere, getting some notch,

and I was lying there below decks, with one eye open and fixed on the vermin as they scurried back and forth,

when one of them, chancing to catch my eye, stopped.
