Zach Wood is sitting at his computer courting controversy. It's the winner of 2016 and Wood is a sophomore at

Williams College, the prestigious liberal arts school tucked away in the sleepy

northwest corner of Massachusetts.

He's also the president of Uncomfortable Learning,

a student group that brings incendiary speakers to campus,

staunch anti-feminists, climate change deniers.

And now... Would hit send on an all school bulletin.

Uncomfortable learning has selected its next speaker, John Derbyshire.

Derbyshire is a writer and mathematician.

He's also a self-proclaimed racist who believes that black people, and these are quotes, are

less intelligent and ferociously hostile.

There are generalized statistical differences between races and those are facts about the

world that we can discover empirically and evaluate and maybe feed into our social policy.

Woods announcement booms across the campus like a cannon shop and the backlash is swift.

First his friends bombard him with exasperated text messages. They can't

understand why someone like Zach, a young black liberal Democrat, would want to

give a platform to somebody like Derbyshire. Then strangers start replying to the post

and the conversation takes a menacing turn.

Things like,

Zach Wood may look black, but as far as I'm concerned,

he's white.

And we need the oil and switch to deal with him in this midnight hour.
