the president and founder of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy's writing his Washington Times column

with a recommendation to the Trump

administration, to the government in Kiev, to Moscow, to any on all listening in Europe, sign the

minerals deal, get it done. No matter what the backstory is, this will be a demonstration that the

U.S. will stay involved in Ukraine indefinitely because there's

money in it. And then news comes that the minerals deal with Ukraine is signed. Cliff, congratulations.

This is a surprising moment that the White House listened to the FD. Are you pleased? Good evening to you, Cliff.

Yeah, I'm pleased. This is the way it's supposed to work, and I hope there won't be any deviation from

this protocol going forward. And the deal looks to you a positive between Washington and Kiev,

between Washington and Moscow. The fact is that the United States now has

an investment to protect in Ukraine and can't easily give it up. Does that change the direction

of the talks about Mr. Trump leaving Europe? Oh, I think it does. I think it does. I think Steve

Besson, who I think

was, helped advise on this and has thought this through. I had some very good quotes on this.

The U.S. is making an investment in the security, in the independence, in the sovereignty of

Ukraine. It's an economic investment, but it's more than that. I think it's,

so I think it's very positive. I don't think President Trump is likely to walk away from the

negotiations as he was threatening to do a week so ago because he's been very frustrated. His
