This is CBS, I on the World. I'm John Batchel. I welcome Professor Russell Berman, the Walter

Haas Professor in the Humanities, Stanford University, the Department of German Studies

and Comparative Literature, also a fellow at the Hoover Institution, writing in 1945 about

the art of the deal, Donald Donald Trump and the war in Ukraine.

In these last hours, there are headlines that illustrate what is in front of Mr. Putin and Mr.

Trump. The headline in London, F.T. Trump tells Putin to reach Ukraine deal. That's in quotes.

Soon or U.S. will increase sanctions.

U.S. President says Washington can impose more trade restrictions on Moscow.

Professor, a very good evening to you. You begin with offering Putin something positive.

Mr. Trump begins by offering that I won't do something negative to you. Which do you prefer, Professor? Good evening to you. Good evening, John. I'm happy to speak with you. I'm going to say

that the president has had more negotiating experience than I've had. So I trust his judgment on this.

But actually, in my 1945 piece, I also begin with

something negative. I suggest that President Trump should tell Putin that unless he budges,

he, President Trump, will increase military support to Ukraine in order for the Ukrainians to be able to

take out the supply chains, thereby isolating the Russian troops, and maybe taking out the

Black Sea fleet. President Trump is more moderate than I am on this. He's only suggesting

that he might raise trade sanctions.

Well, I went immediately to the sanctions talk because talking to Moscow every other week,

I talk to young people in Moscow, professionals.

But in any event, these are well-educated and well-raised young people.

And they look forward to the sanctions regime being lifted.
