So during the Victorian era, portrait paintings were still actually a very popular thing,

especially amongst the extremely wealthy, but the working class people would often have to save their money to get one.

But it was cheaper to be drawn from just the shoulders up.

And the more limbs that you want to be painted, well, the more the artist would charge you. So requesting that your arms and legs be drawn, well, it would quite literally cost you an arm and a leg. Oh, so you knew you were rich if you had an arm or a leg in the painting. Yeah. Isn't that kind of funny, though, because it's like you go back and you look at the historical Victorian era kind of paintings.
