Let's get you caught up with today's seven stories. At number one, the US just set a grim record for mass shootings in a single year.

The 37th and 38th mass shootings this year happened on Sunday in Texas and in Washington State.

That means 2023 has seen the highest number of mass killings with guns in any year since at least 2006 and for

context here the post defines a mass shooting as an event in which four or more

victims were killed the latest deaths brought the total number of people killed in

these shootings in 2023 to 197. That is another record. But that's also

just the tip of the iceberg of overall US gun deaths. More than 48,000 people died

of gunshot wounds last year. The number of mass killings with guns dropped during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic.

But as daily life returned to normal, the frequency of these shootings crept back up.

Advocates say the new records should act as a wake-up call for lawmakers who oppose gun regulations.

Number two, Israel's military is pushing deeper into the southern Gaza Strip.

Israel has called this a new phase of its war in Gaza after a pause in fighting fell apart on Friday.

Satellite images have shown dozens of armored vehicles just outside Khan Yunus, the biggest

city in the south of the territory.

Thousands of civilians who have fled northern Gaza since last month are now facing new

evacuation orders in the south.

But yesterday the UN Secretary General said that for people ordered to

evacuate there's nowhere safe to go and very little to survive on and the violence

in Gaza has spilled over to the other Palestinian territory, the West Bank.
