Good morning and welcome to the Morning Show podcast. My name is

Anthony. I'm Carla Marie and today is Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024. The Core 4. The four headlines

you need to know. Our federal government has a plan to kill half a million owls on the West Coast.

The proposal is for hunters to kill 500,000 of the invasive barred owls over the next three decades to protect the northern spotted

owl, which is in decline. There's basically a battle of owls happening on the west coast.

The barred owl is from the east coast. It's larger,

more aggressive, and has basically taken over the area from the northern spotted owl. The spotted

owl numbers have plummeted 75% over the last two decades while barred owl numbers are thriving

on the west coast. But 75 different animal rights

and wildlife protection organizations sent a letter to the U.S. Interior Secretary explaining

why this was a reckless plan. And it's not just because they don't believe these owls should

be killed. There is concern of letting hunters into sensitive forest ecosystems.
