From CNN, I'm Aaron Matheson with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, October 21st. We start with President Donald Trump, whose hopes for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, have stalled out.

An administration official told CNN there were, quote,

no plans for a summit between the two, quote, in the immediate future.

This is a shift from an earlier announcement where Trump, following a phone call

with Putin, said the leaders would meet, quote, within two weeks or so, pretty quick.

CNN military analyst, retired Admiral James DeVritus, agreed with Ukrainian President Zelensky

that Putin became less interested in diplomacy after Trump declined to send Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.

So what I hope is that President Trump will, in fact, strongly consider sending

Tomahawks to Ukraine. I hope he does. And I hope he also considers strongly further economic

pressure on Moscow. Until we do that, Putin will not be serious about coming to the negotiating table.

Officials also expected Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart, Sergey

Lavrov, to lay the groundwork for the Trump-Pooten summit.

But multiple officials told CNN that diplomatic engagement was also no longer happening for

now.
