President Donald Trump and Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney are meeting face-to-face

for the first time at the White House today as tensions over tariffs threatened to boil over.

CNN's Kevin Liptack has more.

Krista, this is a high-stakes meeting for Prime Minister Carney, and really the balancing act for him could not be starker.

He's just entered office, writing this swell of anti-Trump sentiment, voters in Canada, delivering

his party this massive come-from-behind victory, fueled in part by Trump's trade war and his

rumblings about making Canada the 51st state. But at the same time, he knows that antagonizing Trump is going to be a recipe for disaster.

And I don't think there's much appetite for making U.S.-Canada relationship worse than it's already become.

So this is really kind of the finest of lines for Carney to walk when he arrives here to the White House today.
