The first ships carrying Chinese goods subject to 145% U.S. tariffs are arriving in the port of Los Angeles.

The port's executive director says there's been a drop-off in imports from China.

80 ships were expected to arrive in May, but 20% of those have been canceled.

He says American businesses aren't interested in paying the steep tariff, which can more than double the price of Chinese goods.

As a result, many ships pulling into U.S. harbors from China are half full, which means American consumers will face higher prices and shortages of certain items in a matter of weeks.
