What's up? Hey there! Welcome to this edition of the Shalene Show. Kind of a different type of

0:04.8

episode when I haven't done before, but based on popular demand based on your request, here it is,

0:10.1

my top 20 picks for documentaries. Welcome to the Shalene Show. Shalene is a New York Times best-selling

0:16.3

author, celebrity fitness trainer, and obsessed with helping you live your dream life. People are

0:21.9

always surprised when I talk about the number of audiobooks, podcasts, and documentaries that I

0:27.9

watch. They're like, don't you have a business to run or things to do? Like, how are you consuming

0:32.9

all this information? Well, it's just part of what I do. Like, my evening routine with my husband,

0:40.3

with my daughter Sierra, with Brockwynne's home, we watch documentaries. We don't watch any scripted

0:46.5

TV whatsoever. We freaking love documentaries. It's something that we have done with our kids

0:53.3

since they were in middle school, and we've loved it. And I think documentaries are awesome.

1:05.6

first created, there was kind of this belief that a true documentary is just showing you the facts,

1:12.5

kind of like a news report, and it was supposed to be unbiased. But clearly today, we know that any

1:20.0

documentary, you're looking at it through the lens of the filmmaker, and they have natural biases,

1:26.4

is that a word, biases, biases, whatever, they have their own perspective, and you're catching a

1:32.1

piece of that as well. But so many of them are just a really great way to start conversations,

1:38.0

to expose your family and your kids to real life. And it's really cool. So if you have a difficult

1:44.8

time, this is just a family thing right now, like a parenting thing. If you have a difficult time

1:49.1

connecting with your kids on something, on some level, maybe they're all caught up in their

1:54.0

video games, or they spend a lot of time in their bedrooms, have them pick the documentary and watch

1:59.7

it as a family. That was like a rule in our household. Nobody went to their room to like get away

2:05.6

from the family or play video games, or even to do their homework. Our kids watched TV, watched
