Once upon a time there lived a tailor, who had a son who was extremely small.

In fact, he was no larger than your thumb. And so he was called Tom Thumb. He was a courageous little fellow and had big ideas of his own. Father, I must go into the world and find my

fortune. Very good, my son. I wish you luck. Then his father went to the cupboard and took

out a darning needle. He made a top for it using sealing wax and gave it to Tom. Use this sword

to defend yourself on your journey, he said. Thank you, father, replied Tom.

Tom knew this would be the last night he would spend with his parents for quite some time.

He went to the kitchen and asked his mother,

What is it you've made for dinner, mother?

You can see for yourself, my darling, she replied.

Tom hopped up onto the stool, then climbed up to the shelf just above the stove and peeked into the pot. The steam wafted up into the chimney and he took a deep breath

and then found himself being carried upward by the steam. He floated for a few moments,

then dropped back down to the earth. Ah, stew it is, he said. You are quite right. Now, go wash up,

said his mother. That night, Tom and his parents ate their

last supper together, and in the morning, he tucked his sword into his belt, heaved his sack
