Thank you. begin. There once was a man who had three sons. The youngest was called dumbling. He was disliked, mocked, and put down on every possible occasion.

One day, the man's eldest son decided to go into the forest to cut wood,

and before he left, his mother gave him a beautiful cake and a bottle of cider,

so that he may not be hungry or thirsty.

When he entered the forest, he met a grey-haired man who bit him good day and said,

Do give me a piece of cake and a sip of cider.

I am so very hungry and thirsty.

The young man replied,

If I were to give you my cake and cider, then I would have none left for myself.

Be away with you.

And he left the little grey man and went on to find wood to chop. It was not long before he found a good tree

and began to cut. But he made a full stroke and cut his arm with the axe so that he had to go

home to bandage it up. And this was all the little grey man's

doing. After this, the second son went into the forest. Just like the eldest, his mother gave him

a sweet cake and some cider to take with him. When he entered the forest, the little grey man appeared and asked just as before for some cake and cider.
