General Marshall was the chairman of the American Battle Monuments Commission after the Second World War was over.

And he actually made the point that, you know, we ought to leave some of the damage unrepaired just to remind visitors

who come to these World War I sites that there was a second World War that passed through there.

On this Memorial Day weekend, Dr. Carter takes us out a tour of Ayn Marne American Cemetery.

In this series, we take a look at some of the cemeteries mentioned and described in the book

and tell their stories.

Ayn Marne Cemetery, World War I Cemetery is what we discuss on this segment.

Tell us where Ayn Marn is and what the layout is like there.

Ayn Marn is also known perhaps more popularly as the Bellow Wood Cemetery.

And it's about 38, 40 miles east of Paris, six, seven miles from the town of Chateau-Tierry,

which is on the Marn River, which to any student of World War I, the Marne River is very famous,

or a couple battles fought at either end of the war along that river. But it's a bellow wood,

of course, is hilly terrain and pretty densely forested. But the surrounding area is, it's got a bit of a roll to it.

There's some rather steep ravines in some instances, but it's farmland.

Basically, they're beautiful wheat fields.

And I've been going there for years and driving through this terrain, and I still haven't figured out all the different crops that are grown there.
